Product Specification: Stainless Steel Allen Caps (Socket Head Cap Screws)
Stainless Steel Allen Caps, technically known as Socket Head Cap Screws (SHCS), are high-strength fasteners featuring a cylindrical head and a hexagonal (Allen) drive hole. These are the "gold standard" for precision machinery and marine environments where both space-saving and corrosion resistance are vital.
1. Material Grades
Stainless steel fasteners are primarily categorized by their metallurgical composition:
Grade Common Name Specification Ideal Use
A2 (304) 18-8 Stainless Standard grade; good corrosion resistance. Kitchenware, general machinery, food processing.
A4 (316) Marine Grade Added Molybdenum ($2\text{-}3\%$) for acid/salt resistance. Coastal areas, chemical plants, offshore oil/gas.
410 Martensitic Heat-treatable; higher strength but lower corrosion resistance. Self-drilling screws, high-wear industrial parts.
2. Physical Design & Dimensions
Head Type: Cylindrical with a flat top and a chamfered (beveled) edge.
Drive Type: Internal Hexagonal (Allen) socket.
Thread Types:
Metric: M1.6 up to M48+ (Standard: ISO 4762 / DIN 912).
Imperial (SAE): #0 up to 1.5" (Standard: ASME B18.3).
Threading: Can be Fully Threaded (shorter lengths) or Partially Threaded (longer lengths to provide a smooth "grip" shank).
3. Key Technical Specifications
Tensile Strength: Typically rated at 500 MPa (for A2-50/A4-50) or 700 MPa (for A2-70/A4-70). Note: Stainless is generally "tougher" but has lower tensile strength than Grade 12.9 Alloy Steel.
Tolerance: Precision "Class 6g" for Metric threads to ensure smooth fitment.
Hardness: Generally non-magnetic (A2/A4) and cannot be hardened by heat treatment, only by cold working.
4. Advantages of Allen Caps
Space Efficiency: The cylindrical head takes up less room than a hexagonal bolt head; it can be "counter-sunk" (recessed) into a bored hole for a flush surface.
Higher Torque: The internal hex drive allows for more torque than a Phillips or Slotted screw without "camming out."
Aesthetics: Provides a clean, professional, and "high-tech" look to finished products.
5. Professional Installation Tips
Anti-Seize Lubricant: Stainless steel is prone to "Galling" (cold-welding). Always apply a nickel or ceramic-based anti-seize lubricant to the threads before installation to prevent them from seizing permanently.
Tool Match: Ensure your Allen key/bit is sharp. A rounded tool will quickly strip the internal hex, which is difficult to extract once damaged.
Magnetic Note: High-quality A2/A4 stainless is usually non-magnetic. If your "stainless" bolt is strongly magnetic, it is likely a 400-series or has a high carbon content, meaning it will eventually rust.
